BT Connect Applications
BT Connect applications, includes a web performance monitoring service allowing customers to have a full view of the efficiency of end-user web experience and improve their online business operations, and a Connect Acceleration Monitoring service for customers to track what’s running on their network, resolve IT performance problems faster and lower IT management costs. And Connect Optimisation service will help you understand and prioritise your most important applications so you can manage less important traffic over the internet, reducing costs and downtime.
Why BT Connect Optimisation?
BT Connect Optimisation – based on Ipanema technology is a fully managed service and is part of the Connect Applications portfolio. Connect Optimisation will help you understand and prioritise your business critical applications and manage non business critical traffic over both private Wide Area Networks and the Internet reducing cost and application downtime.
Connect Optimisation is the next generation in application and WAN management moving beyond the traditional approach to Class of Service (CoS) and supercharging business critical applications as well as managing non critical traffic to cut costs and application downtime. The SmartPath feature is Cloud ready enabling you to align your network with your business needs to fully utilise the cost advantages of the cloud.
Prioritise the applications that matter most
Our Connect Optimisation service will help you understand and prioritise your most important applications so you can manage less important traffic over the internet, reducing costs and downtime. Connect Optimisation is part of our portfolio of application performance management services.
Protect the applications that matter most, no matter what
Connect Optimisation protects your applications even during data ‘rush hour’ times of the day or month. It will also protect essential applications if your users create a lot of non-essential traffic on your network.
Improve application response and slash bandwidth costs
Connect Optimisation can make best use of your network bandwidth and throttle back on non-business critical applications to stop congestion. By allocating the right bandwidth to important applications Connect Optimisation has speeded up response times for customers by 33 per cent. And compression techniques can also cut bandwidth by over 40 per cent.
Run your network the way you want
Connect Optimisation is the next generation of network management. It lets you change application policies fast. It’s improved the speed of a network policy change for one customer by 32 hours.
Choosing the right network path
Connect Optimisation directs WAN traffic across multiple networks to make sure your applications perform at their best, any time.
The service enables us to analyse and manage bandwidth demand per application and location. This new service was a perfect fit for us. With application visibility and control our applications and our underlying IP network are being optimised to best support our critical business processes.

BT Connect Optimisation
Connect Optimisation determines the performance objectives required by an application for good user experience and dynamically tunes the transport network to ensure business critical applications always meet the performance objective. The system works collaboratively to protect key applications even during congestion peaks.
An example would be during monthly business process cycles that create busy application traffic flows where Connect Optimisation guarantees the performance of the critical applications. Connect Optimisation centrally controls traffic across the whole network by identifying traffic congestion and altering data flows to best utilise the bandwidth at each site. The pre-defined metrics set for each application type means that the most important or critical application data has priority over less critical traffic so that maximum performance is maintained during periods of network.

Why BT Connect Intelligence?
Connect Intelligence is a portfolio of services that monitors your applications and IT infrastructure. The Unified Dashboard brings everything together into a single view aligning business objectives with performance metrics of your processes, applications and IT. Connect Intelligence includes Web Performance Monitoring that enables you to rapidly identify and resolve web application problems no matter where they occur on the web application delivery chain.
There are three main areas to Connect Intelligence that combine in three incremental steps.
Application Performance Monitoring (APMo):
This is the foundation to Connect Intelligence. It provides granular performance monitoring of applications and internal user experience. It helps you understand all tiers in your environment from the enterprise datacentre and includes
- Application Landscape: Understand your entire application landscape
- Packaged applications: SAP, Siebel, Oracle Forms.
- Thin client: Citrix and Microsoft Terminal Services and VPN access.
- Middleware: MQ, XML/Soap, Tuxedo Jolt.
- Database: Oracle, SQL Server, DB2, Sybase, Informix.
Web Performance Monitoring (WPMo)
This starts to look outside the organisation monitoring web applications to identify and resolve problems no matter where they occur on the web application delivery chain. Key capabilities include:
- Monitoring web pages or complex business transactions inc Flash, AJAX and Flex.
- More than 200,000 Internet Backbone and Last Mile monitoring locations via the Gomez Network.
- Instant testing diagnostics using HTTP, Ping, Trace Route and DNS Lookup testing.
- Real-time, detailed alerts delivered via e-mail, SMTP and SMS.
- Visibility into HTML, trace routes and screenshots for failed tests with Screen Capture on Error (SCoE).
The final area bringing all of the features together is an enhanced unifying dashboard which presents all of the reporting features of APMo plus the ability to take feeds from different information sources.
Unified Dashboard provides a single view of current performance and alerts with operational and diagnostic dashboards. The Unified Dashboard enables better decision making by providing business-relevant information for different stakeholders who are either involved in service delivery or affected by it.

For instance, our technology can tell you how well your websites are performing across the internet, from how long they take to process transactions on different browsers to how they compare with your competition.
Cut costs and budget more effectively.
You’ll be able to plan your budgets better and save on the manpower you need to keep your operations running cost effectively.
Streamline your operation with clear, effective reporting.
Our reports present your metrics simply, via an online dashboard that’s easy to set up and use and gives you historic and real-time reports. Our help desk and an analyst assigned to monitor your applications will also make sure you get the best out of the service.
Easy access and detailed data backed by round-the-clock support mean less time spent troubleshooting, and more time dedicated to your core business.
Boost revenue and protect your brand.
Speedy websites mean faster transactions, happy customers and more revenue. You may think you’ve done the load testing to make sure your sites are running fast enough, but sometimes it’s not enough. We worked with a retailer who thought transactions were running on a five second response. Our monitoring showed many were taking 20 seconds and half were timing out after 90. Based on just our initial advice, the retailer cut response times by 80 per cent.
Because we use Web performance monitoring industry benchmarking we can help you find out how your competitors’ websites are performing. And that helps us keep you out in front.
BT Connect Intelligence at work
For one large UK retailer BT is providing monitoring of internal Oracle applications with the monitoring of the external website. Before BT Connect Intelligence the customer had experienced major performance problems with its online business including a 2 day outage which cost them £7m in lost sales.
Based upon some previous load testing conducted by the customer they had thought that all transactions on the website would meet a 2 second service level, BT has found from monitoring the website that many of the transactions were hitting 20 seconds and half were timing out after 90 seconds. BT also found inconsistent performance for users accessing the website from different geographies. As a result of the monitoring and recommendations made by BT, such as improving the website and regional server environment the customer is experiencing much better web performance.
Connect Applications has developed into a solid, commercially-viable service, with tangible benefits for business users who desire an optimal network performance. With the assessments, diagnostics, monitoring and optimisation features, BT demonstrates how bottlenecks are removed and how surges in demand are identified, accelerated and managed in real time.”
